*Alternative Approach to Labor Analgesia

This lecture will focus on non traditional ways of managing pain associated with the parturient.

 Key objective of this session:

At the conclusion of this lecture, the anesthesia provider will be able to utilize alternative approaches to pain management of the laboring patient.

*Regional Anesthesia Techniques and Multi-Modal Pharmacology
Speaker: Dan Nash, DNAP, CRNA, APRN

Discussion of current multi-modal drug options and regional anesthetic nerve blocks for post-op pain management as options for decreasing and minimizing opioid use. Presentation on the techniques for performing the US guided FICB and US guided popliteal sciatic block.

Key objective of this session:

Mutli-Modal pharmacology treatment and regional nerve blocks can improve post-operative pain limit the usage of opioid medications and the side effects they may cause.

*Exparel as an Adjunct

This session is designed to discuss the indications, benefits, and risks associated with the use of Exparel (bupivacaine liposome) as an effextive adjunct in the management of post-operative pain following select surgical procedures (i.e. orthopedics, general surgery). Enhanced recovery from anesthesia can be optimized through the use of non-opioid or opioid-sparing agents such as Exparel.

Key objective of this session:

After the session the participants will be able to identify the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of Exparel.

AANA Update

This session is designed to provide an update about the AANA, the profession and its membership including legislative initiatives, membership engagement, and emerging trends/issues impacting anesthesia practice.

Key Objectives of this Session:

1. After the session participants will be able to identify trends in AANA Membership demographics, education, employment, and public relations. 

2. Discuss current anesthesia legislative initiatives and strategies, as well as issues affecting practice. Discuss initiatives regarding membership, CRNA wellness, PAC and research.

Just Another Day in the OB OR: There is No Such Thing as  a Routine C-Section

 Discussion of a case study that revealed an adverse outcome of an unanticipated general anesthetic of a parturient following a cesarean section.

At the conclusion of this lecture, the anesthesia provider will be prepared to manage unanticipated adverse outcomes of a cesarean section. 

*Local Anesthesia Toxicity

Local anesthesia systemic toxicity (LAST) is an uncommon but severe complication of regional blocks with the advent of ultrasound guided technique. When LAST occurs seconds count in reversing its effects. The LAST protocol is an effective modality in preventing the undesired morbidity and mortality effects of LAST if not recognized nor treated early.

Key objective of this session:

After this session participants will be able to outline and describe the clinical protocal for local anesthesia systemic toxicity (LAST).

Differential Diagnosis Acute Pulmonary Edema

This session will provide a clinical case scenario of Acute Pulmonary Edema following emergence from anesthesia. The sequence of events will be detailed and specific algorithm discussed to establish the APE diagnosis.

Participants will be able to identify the key clinical signs and symptoms associated with pulmonary edema.

Anesthesia Evidence Based Studies for Strategic Discussions

Summary and review of Anesthesia studies in the last decade to empower strategic discussions with legislators, regulators and administrators.

Key objectives of this session:

1. Learner will have a basic understanding of the need for strategic planning in legislative and regulatory battles.

4.  Learner will understand the data, conclusions and ramifications of the Geographical Imbalance of Anesthesia Providers and Its Impact on the Uninsured and Vulnerable Populations by Quraishi and Jordan.

5.  Learner will understand the data, conclusions and ramifications of the Scope of Practice Laws and Anesthesia Complications: No Measurable Impact of CRNA Expanded Scope of Practice on Anesthesia-related Complications by the Lewin Group.

Topic: Cost Effective Analysis

Anesthesia Reimbursement and Compliance

Comprehensive review of the process of obtaining and optimizing reimbursement for anesthesia services as well as awareness of current compliance trends.

Key objectives of this session:

1. Learner will be able to identify the basic formula for billing anesthesia services.

2. Learner will be able to identify use of ICD-10 codes and appropriate anesthesia CPT codes as they relate to procedures.

3. Learner will understand the difference between the Anesthesia Type of Service 7 and the Procedural Type of Service 2 and how they relate to billing for their own services.

4. Learner will be able to evaluate their individual productivity utilizing a template for facility payer mix and anesthesia productivity.

5. Learner will be able to identify billing issues that can result in lack of Compliance and Fraud.

6. Learner will understand the purpose of Recovery Audit Contractors
