Speaker: Heather J. Rankin, DNP, CRNA

Certain medications have been linked with neuroapoptosis in research studies. It is unknown what these medications do to human children.  This lecture will present the medications that have been associated with neuroapoptosis in animals, discuss these medications and their uses with humans, and look at evidence-based literature research regarding neuroapoptosis.

  • Discuss and understand medications associated with neuroapoptosis in animals, the use of these medications with the pediatric population, and the research that has been published regarding both.

SLAM Airway Flowchart and Airway Anatomy Assessment
Speaker: James Rich, CRNA, APRN

If your patient can't breathe, nothing else matters. We will cover three main topics in this session: 1) Uses of Oxygenation status and carbon dioxide to determine whether to use an elective or emergency pathway. 2) The four pathways: oxygenation/ventilation, intubation, rescue ventilation and cricothyrotomy. 3) How to rapidly deal with critical airway events and a crash airway.

  • In this session, you will learn to never tolerate hypoxia. You will put iinto action rescue ventilation after three failed intubations. In normal circumstances, you will provide rescue ventilation with an FDA approved SGA.

5:15 - 7:15 p.m.
Happy Hour with Exhibitors

 Sunday, September 30, 2018

General Session

*Rapid Sequence Intubation, Delayed Sequence Intubation and Airway Pharmacology
Speaker: James Rich, CRNA, APRN

Is RSI scientifically based or part of an anesthesia folk lore? How can delayed sequence intubation eliminate the need for RSI? Have a rational and methodical approach to use of airway drugs. The future of Succinylcholine in the presence of Sugammadex.

  • After attending this session, you will be able to list absolute contra indicators to the use of Succinylcholine.  You will also be able to list the advantages of DSI over RSI

*8:30 - 9:30 a.m.
General Session

*Legal Regulatory Issues a CRNA Should Know in Dealing with Anesthetic Shortages
Speaker: Mark J. Silberman, J.D.

Many CRNAs are facing anesthetic shortages and need to have an understanding of the issues they should consider in managing anesthetic shortages while ensuring quality patient care.

  • Learn how to avoid problems managing circumstances involving anesthetic shortages;
  • Understand the importance of prioritizing patient care - and documenting that priority.

9:30 - 10:30 a.m.
General Session

Basic Through Advanced Techniques to Rescue Intubation (Including video Laryngoscopy)
Speaker: James Rich, CRNA, APRN

In this session you will be able to: define difficult intubation versus failed intubation, find ways to prevent airway trauma during difficult intubation, and learn simple techniques to make intubation easy. You will also learn about head-elevated laryngoscopy position versus ear-to-sternal notch position, the rational use of video laryngoscopy versus laryngeal mask assisted intubation, and to compare and contrast the channeled versus non channeled V.L.S. Learn to avoid the law of insanity; doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.

  • Define difficult versus failed intubation
  • Learn, compare and contrast different intubation methods

Rescue Ventilation Techniques Using Supraglottic Airways
Speaker: James Rich, CRNA, APRN

In this session, you will learn 1) When to proceed with rescue ventilation 2) What are the contra indications to the use of supraglottic airway for rescue ventilations, 3) Why choose one SGA over another? and 4) Compare and contrast of supraglottic airways

  • You will be able to discuss the advantage of SGAs over BVM ventilation.

Which drugs are appropriate? 2) Rescue ventilation techniques using supraglottic airways, 3) Understand the impact of intubation techniques in obese patients 4) Perform a bougie-assisted intubation.

  • Describe the indications and contraindications for using a supraglottic airway for rescue ventilation.
  • Demonstrate the proper technique for identifying the cricothyroid membrane.
  • Demonstrate the proper technique for performing bougie-assisted intubation.
